The Different Types of HDTV Explained

April 18th, 2009

Today, there are a variety of display technologies available in the market. A few decades back, the only technology available was CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). Now, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), Plasma and DLP (Digital Light Processing) are the HDTV displays fighting it out in the market. What are the differences between these technologies and which one is the best?

Display Technologies Explained

CRT or cathode ray tube display technology is based on vacuum tubes that contain electron guns and fluorescent screens. Its advantages are good black and color performance, smooth gray-scale response, good screen refresh rate and wide viewing angle. The next to appear in the market is Plasma TV, which is a type of flat panel display technology based on gas made up of xenon and neon. It also exhibits good black and color performance, high contrast, fast screen refresh rate and wide viewing angle.

LCD TV technology, which was initially used for computers, is based on liquid crystals that align themselves when activated by electric current. Its advantages are long screen life, good glare response, high contrast, low power consumption and immunity to screen burn. DLP (Digital Light Processing) is actually a rear projection technology wherein the CRT projectors are replaced by microchip projectors called Digital Micromirror Device (DMD). It also has good black and color performance and good screen refresh rate. Lighter but larger screen sizes are possible because of the microchip technology used in manufacturing the device.

Which Display Technology to Choose

If only a 40 inch or smaller display with good picture quality is required, CRT is the clear winner especially if the budget is limited. The problem is there are a very limited number of HDTV CRT displays in the market today. If the requirement is a thin display at 50 inch or larger sizes, then plasma is the best choice. Aside from its good color and black performance, you get best value for your money in screen sizes 50 inch or bigger. For those requiring smaller screen sizes but want something stylish and slim, LCD TV is the clear choice. It also has the added advantage of longer screen life, lesser power consumption and it does not suffer from screen burn. For screen sizes 70 and bigger like in small digital cinemas, DLP is the clear winner.

The comparison we discussed above did not show a clear overall winner among the display devices available. The different technologies have their own strengths and weaknesses. What is clear is for every requirement, there is a specific type of display more applicable. Other factors to consider are of course the price of the display and the viewer preferences.

The Ideal HD TV Surround Sound Set Up

April 6th, 2009

Get the best out of your home theatre. High Definition TV brings you Dolby Digital (TM) 5.1 surround sound. 5.1 means five speakers and one subwoofer to envelope you in sound.

Two front speakers and two rear speakers put you in the centre of the action. A fifth, centre-channel speaker is positioned above or below your TV. The subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room, and delivers the low-frequency bass effects to complete the big cinema sound experience.

A surround sound system is usually completed with a “receiver” box that controls the sound for all the speakers.

To maximise your HD Television set-up choose the right audio cables to connect surround sound to your HD TV. Connections do matter.

Some cabling of the options for setting up your HD TV Surround Sound are;

- HDMI cable - The simplest and best way to connect your HD TV to surround sound, HDMI cables carry crisp, clear audio and video signals in a single cable.

- Optical cable - Transferred in a fibre optic cable, this audio signal is sent with light pulses and supports stereo to multi-channel audio transmission. Compatible with AC-3, Dolby Digital and Stereo.

- Digital Coax cable - Transferred in a single shielded cable, this audio signal is sent with electrical signals, and supports stereo to multi-channel audio transmission. Compatible with AC-3, Dolby Digital and Stereo.

- RCA cable - An analogue signal output used to transmit mono or stereo audio channels

Get even more from your High Definition TV with an audio set-up that puts you right in the middle of the action.
